Personal statement

I trained at Queen Margaret College in Edinburgh, graduating in 1983. I started work in the NHS immediately and have spent almost my entire career in orthopaedics.

After a short spell in Glasgow and then Edinburgh Orthopaedic Clinic, I moved to  Princess Margaret Rose Orthopaedic Hospital, Edinburgh and worked there until it closed and moved to the Royal Infirmary, Little France, in 2001. For many years, my special interest has been upper limbs.  I worked in an extended role as an upper limb specialist for over 20 years working in Orthopaedics and Physiotherapy at the Royal Infirmary. My post involved working closely with excellent upper limb surgeons thanks to whom I have had many opportunities in research, education and travel and treated many interesting and rewarding patients.  I have also been very fortunate to work with fantastic radiologists who are invaluable in the management of certain shoulder problems.

I retired from the NHS in April 2022 after many happy years with wonderful colleagues and patients.

In addition to the NHS, I have worked privately in some capacity throughout most of my career. This has been in sports injury clinics, rugby clubs and private practices.  I was a physiotherapist at The Edinburgh Clinic from 2008 until September 2022 when I was very pleased to join Physis in their Mayfied Gardens clinic.
