Why Physiotherapy Rehabilitation Matters

Physiotherapy Rehabilitation

Exercise rehabilitation is a key component of the service provided by the physiotherapists at Physis Physiotherapy. All of our clinics in Edinburgh have rehabilitation space and equipment, a designated gym space or we create one within the patients home.

What is physiotherapy rehabilitation?

Physiotherapy rehabilitation through exercise aims to optimise patient function and well being, it helps the patient get back to daily activities, work, leisure and sport. Rehabilitation focuses on reducing disability and lifestyle restrictions. Rehabilitation can be used to recover from injury or disease and is also offered for the management of long term conditions. So whether your conditions affects your heart, lungs, balance or motor systems exercise can help.

Rehabilitation should start as soon as possible to speed recovery. The program combines many different components to be most effective. Education, reassurance, progressive and measured exercise plans with the encouragement and support of your physiotherapist will achieve the best outcome for you.

If there was a pill that could do all of this?

  • Reduce back pain by 25%
  • Reduce falls risk by 30%
  • Reduce the need for joint replacements by 25-35%
  • Reduce depression by 30%
  • Reduce cardiovascular disease by 35%
  • Reduce diabetes by 40%
  • Reduce dementia by 30%

Plus it is almost completely free of cost and side effects then you would take it- right? Well there is one and its called exercise.

But you don’t know what to do, how much to do?

Physiotherapists can plan and implement the right individualised exercise rehabilitation for a range of problems.

  • Post viral fatigue (such as Covid 19)
  • Pre and post surgical patients for total hip replacement (THR), total knee replacement (TKR)
  • Fractures of both upper and lower limbs
  • Mobility/balance problems and patients at high risk of falls
  • Patients with cardiac or pulmonary rehabilitation needs

But I’m too old? Age is only a number.

There are many barriers to rehabilitation such as your current health or compliance with the plan, but age is not one of them. We have rehabilitated patients up to 96 years and where there is a will there is a way. These barriers can often be worked around and it is the role of your physiotherapist to work out the best plan for you.

Rehabilitation matters and no-one should miss out. Although our NHS colleagues provide a fantastic service, often patients can be left feeling more could have been done.

If you wish to discuss your situation with us we would be happy to arrange a free telephone consultation with one of our team first.
